Morning Discussion: Scrap Metal

Today's Morning Discussion is not brought to you by the letters BT--if it were, dear Alice wouldn't be on her fifth consecutive day of wonky Internet connectivity and I wouldn't be penning Morning D in some half-awake state. Cheers to you, British Telecom.

In other news, Scrap Metal is now available as an Xbox 360 download. It's a top-down combat racer--imagine a cross between R.C. Pro-Am and Twisted Metal--and I've really enjoyed what I've played thus far. The various missions--sometimes you're going after one specific target, sometimes you're just straight-up racing--mix things up enough so that things don't get too mundane, plus unlocking / upgrading / customizing all the different cars has an oddly addictive hook. My first car? Pink with a big donut on top.

Is it worth the 1200 Microsoft Points / $15? I'm not sure, I haven't put in enough time to say for sure, but if you're interested, ...

Woman, 91, dies in Far Northwest Side crash

A 91-year-old woman was killed in an auto crash Tuesday afternoon near O'Hare International Airport, police said.

The incident happened at about 3 p.m. near Higgins and River Roads, police said. The woman was a passenger in a Buick LeSabre with her 87-year-old husband.

The Buick was headed west on Higgins and was making a left turn on to River when it was hit by an eastbound Chrysler sedan, according to police.

The woman suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Lutheran General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. She was identified as Sylvia Thomas of Schiller Park, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Her husband was cited for failure to yield on a left turn, not having insurance and driving with a suspended or revoked license.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the crash.

Two Illinois boys found safe in St. Louis

ThisDecaturBoys280.jpg

Decatur police said the two young boys abducted Tuesday afternoon were found early this morning in St. Louis.

The boys -- Terry Antonio Smith, 4, and J-Amarcus Upchurch, 1-month -- were found unharmed at about 1 a.m. and police have detained and are questioning several people in connection with the incident, said Decatur Police Det. Brad Allen.

They have been put in the custody of the state Department of Children and Family Services.

Allen declined to go into detail on how police traced the boys to a house in St. Louis or the identities of the people in custody.

Authorities had issued an Amber Alert after the boys were taken by two men in the 1900 block of East Cantrell Street at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

They were last seen in a silver passenger...

Civilization V Preview: Small Changes, Big Differences [Gdc10]

Civilization was never the most realistic game, and those who enjoyed battling against a nuclear-armed Gandhi have not minded. The next one, Civilization V, though may be the most natural one thanks to some crafty tweaks.

Kotaku was shown an early version of development studio Firaxis' Civ V running on a PC on the first day of Game Developers Conference here in San Francisco. What was shown was a Civ that behaves just a little more like it is in the real world in regards to everything from terrain to the rules of war and international relations. All have been modified to feel more true to life and more rife than ever with strategic potential.

The game is still a turn-based single or multiplayer quest requiring ample brainpower and planning. Like other Civilization games, the player...

Street Fighter IV iPhone Hands-on Impressions

Released tonight at GDC 2010, the iPhone version of Street Fighter IV is extremely impressive.

The game features 8 fighters: Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Blanka, Dhalsim, Abel, and M. Bison. The fighters can be used for head-to-head multiplayer over Bluetooth or for solo play modes including Dojo mode, which challenges the player to complete increasingly difficult trials while teaching the basics of the port.

I was as skeptic as anyone else, but I'm happy to report that this is faithful port of the full-sized game, minus the characters and modes. Yes, complex combos and moves can be pulled off after a bit of practice. After about 15 minutes, I was able to execute Ryu's signature combo ...

Google Maps to include bike routes

The world's most popular Internet search engine is getting more bicycle-friendly.

On Wednesday, Google will unveil a service offering bicycling directions on its Google Maps feature.

Hard-core and recreational cyclists will be able to use the Web-based technology to plan trips or explore biking trails and routes in Chicago and 149 other U.S. cities, Google officials said.

Several online bike-trip sites already exist.

But bicycling advocates hope Google's entrance in the market benefits not only individual riders but Chicago's transit system as a whole. One goal is to make it easier for non- or infrequent cyclists to access the service, thereby promoting more bicycling.

The Web address for the serv...
